Peggy Sue Is Right For You

2 Feb

What can I say? The Brits are a master of releasing modern tracks that sound authentically retro.
Need proof?

Exhibit A: Peggy Sue “Longest Day of the Year Blues.”

This lullaby, pop track sounds as if it came straight out of the 1950’s. Think Connie Francis, “My Happiness.”

It’s got that classic, my baby left me with a broken heart, kind of vibe, but tosses in a heavy percussion and heavenly but strong harmonies missing from today’s top 40 radio radio stations.

Most impressive are lead singers Rosa Slade and Katy Young’s sensitive and crackled but powerful and soulful vocals, especially when the chorus swells and comes crashing down upon listeners. If you think this sounds remarkably like something that could have come off of any She & Him album, you’re not the only one. It’s almost as if Zooey Deschanel has taken over the helm, and since She & Him have perfected the art of modern day retro, Peggy Sue is in good company.

Discography: Fossils and Other Phantoms (2010), Acrobats (2011), Peggy Sue Play the Songs of Scorpio Rising (2012), Choir of Echoes (2014).
