Ring a Ding Ding

26 Jul

You may not have heard of the band What’s Eating Gilbert, but chances are you are familiar with its leading man Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory fame. “Wearing Your Ring” is a departure for Gilbert on this side project

A duet with his partner Haley Williams from Paramore. It is a throwback to the 50s, think Paul Anka’s “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” The chorus even sounds straight out of that tune in melody.

And it is here on the chorus where things feel the most retro. Gilbert’s voice softens throughout the entirety of the song with Williams contributing only to the chorus. The sound of the two together, harmonizing is a treat to the ears.

The simplicity and sweetness of the lyrics “I’ll never stop wearing your ring/even though we fight, baby” also help to contribute to the all around 50s ballad sound that it seems the band is going for. The fact that Gilbert and Williams are a couple in real life only further bring to life the message of the song.

There is minimal instrumentation on “Wearing Your Ring” which suits the tune just fine, instead focusing on the lyrics and the vocal performances, enhancing the meaning behind the track.

Expect this to be played at many weddings, and just try not to saw “awww”
